According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 7th European Congress of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, held March 26-30, 1995, in Vienna, Austria, "Annual Incidence Rate of Tuberculosis is 60 each 100,000 persons in Spain. Due to the risk of the spread of disease, and the potential for the emergence of drug-resistant strains, the rapid diagnosis of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex is very important. PCR test (Amplicor MTBr Roche Lab.) was evaluated for the detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in respiratory specimens (sputum or bronchial alveolar lavage) by comparing results with smear, cultures and clinical data.
