DOT Refusal Aided MDR-TB Outbreak in California School

An outbreak of multidrug resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) in a Santa Ana, California, high school illustrates the need for routine directly observed therapy (DOT), according to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report.

The study underscores the need for DOT and monitoring of infectiousness in those with drug resistant TB, according to CDC researchers speaking at the 1995 American Thoracic Society/American Lung Association International Conference, held May 20-24, 1995, in Seattle, Washington.

The high school outbreak was originally identified in the spring of 1993 and investigated by the CDC in the fall of that year.
