Mycobacteria's Invasion of Epithelial Cells Significant

The ability of certain strains of mycobacteria to invade epithelial cells may represent an important phenotypic characteristic and could be directly related to pathogenicity.

A successful pathogen can gain entry into a susceptible host and subsequently multiply. Mycobacterium avium is a facultative intracellular pathogen that is capable of invading and replicating within macrophages, fibroblasts, endothelial cells and mucosal epithelial cells. M. tuberculosis is a respiratory pathogen that upon histopathologic sectioning of infected tissues may be found within lung macrophages.
