"Molecular Basis of Drug Resistance in Mycobacterium tuberculosis."

According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 19th International Congress of Chemotherapy, held July 16-21, 1995, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, "The potentially deadly association between AIDS and tuberculosis represents an enormous public health problem of global dimensions which has been compounded by the emergence in the U S of strains of M. tuberculosis resistant to two, or more, frontline drugs. It is now known that, as in other eubacteria, resistance to rifampicin, streptomycin and fluoroquinolones results from missense mutations to essential chromosomal genes encoding the drug targets.
