Guidelines on Preventing Infections in People with HIV Released

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) have released guidelines on preventing opportunistic infections in people with HIV.

Opportunistic infections can cause life-threatening illnesses in people with weakened immune systems. About 80 percent of all people with HIV eventually develop one or more of these infections, according to Henry Masur, M.D., chief of the NIH Clinical Center's Critical Care Medicine Department.
