Study Rejects Wide-Spread Tuberculosis Testing

Mass screening of schoolchildren to detect tuberculosis (TB) costs more than it's worth, even though the disease has surged in recent years, according to a newly released study.

Cities such as New York, New York; Los Angeles, California; Boston, Massachusetts; and Houston, Texas, have started wide-spread screenings in schools in recent years but may not be getting the best value for their dollars, researchers suggest.

A better strategy is to target youngsters most likely to have TB, such as immigrants, said researchers led by Dr. Janet C. Mohle-Boetani of the California Department of Health Services in Berkeley.
