According to an abstract submitted by the author to the 35th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, sponsored by the American Society for Microbiology, held September 17-20, 1995, in San Francisco, California, "Parenteral drug addiction has became a growing problem in Spain since early 80's. 17,592 infections in i.v. drug addicts (IVDA) have been reported from 1977 to 1991 by 71 Spanish hospitals using a standardized form.
