MDR-TB Patients Without HIV Infection Usually Cured

A New York City study finds that HIV negative patients with multidrug resistant tuberculosis respond well to appropriate chemotherapy.

The study, reported by Edward E. Telzak and colleagues, evaluated treatment outcome in a group of MDR-TB patients who were not infected with HIV ("MDR-TB in Patients Without HIV Infection," New England Journal of Medicine, October 5, 1995;333(14):907-911).

MDR-TB outbreak investigations have generally found low rates of treatment response and very high mortality, but these studies have mainly involved patients with advanced HIV infection.
