"Emergence of Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis in Madrid."

According to an abstract submitted by the authors to The Lancet Conference 'The Challenge of Tuberculosis', held September 14-15, 1995, in Washington, D.C., "We investigated the frequency of drug-resistant (DR) strains of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in the metropolitan area of Madrid. A multicentric prospective study from October 1, 1993, to March 31, 1994, was done in cooperation with 8 centres in Madrid. All patients (pts) with a positive culture for MTB were included and clinical data collected. One isolate from each patient was sent to a reference laboratory where drug susceptibility test to isoniazid (INH), rifampicin (RIF), ethambutol, and streptomycin were performed...
