According to an abstract submitted by the authors to The Lancet Conference 'The Challenge of Tuberculosis', held September 14-15, 1995, in Washington, D.C., "Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis was used to investigate the pattern of transmission of TB within a rural population in Hlabisa (an area in KwaZulu Natal), to determine whether RFLP patterns could be useful in predicting drug resistance profiles and to determine the role of exogenous reinfection in patients on treatment in a TB hospital.
