Intentional Overdosing with Isoniazid Not Uncommon

Accidental or intentional isoniazid overdosing is not uncommon and should be suspected when a patient taking the tuberculosis medication presents with seizures, according to a report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the New York City Health Department.

New York City Health Department researchers found 76 cases of isoniazid poisoning at a single hospital between January of 1992 and September of 1993. Surprisingly, more than 80 percent of those who were hospitalized for isoniazid overdoses reported using the drug to attempt suicide.
