Since 1990, the prevalence of HIV infection among the approximately 4000 persons diagnosed annually with tuberculosis in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire has ranged from 45- to 47 percent. An autopsy study conducted in Abidjan in 1991 showed that tuberculosis was the primary cause of death in 32 percent of HIV infected persons.
