Anergy/Disseminated TB May Be Linked in AIDS

It is conceivable that the mechanism which causes anergy to tuberculosis testing in HIV infected persons also leads to disseminated tuberculosis in these persons, according to a report from Canada.

"The mechanism leading to a state of anergy and the mechanism leading to dissemination of dormant tuberculosis appear to be identical," researcher H.R. Hegde wrote ("Anergy, AIDS, and Tuberculosis," Medical Hypotheses, 1995;45:433-440).

The HIV epidemic has resulted in a global resurgence of tuberculosis. Tuberculin skin testing has been found to be negative in roughly 60 percent of the patients with AIDS who develop tuberculosis.
