According to an abstract submitted by the author to the European Conference on Tropical Medicine, held October 22-26, 1995, in Hamburg, Germany, "Tuberculosis (TB) accounts for about 25% of avoidable deaths in poor countries. It is now reemerging also in several effluent countries, increasing dramatically in Africa and is complicated with the emergence of multidrug resistant strains. The increase is largely due to increased life expectancy and the HIV pandemic. The reproductive rate has increased from previously 1.0, a paradigm shift.
