According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 3rd Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections, held January 28 - February 1, 1996, in Washington, DC, "Tuberculosis is one of the most common serious conditions that occur in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. The precise immunologic mechanisms that lead to this complication in HIV infection are uncertain. Gamma/delta T cells with the Vgamma9/Vdelta2 T-cell receptor appear to be critical in the immune response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
