According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the Conference on Global Lung Health and the 1995 Annual Meeting of the IUATLD/UICTMR, held September 9-12, 1995, in Paris, France, "Tuberculosis and AIDS are the two principal causes of death by communicable diseases in Rio de Janeiro City (RJ). TB morbidity rate was 150 per 100,000 inhabitants in 1993 while AIDS cases reached 113 per 100,000 inhabitants. The TB morbidity rate in Brazil was 65 per 100,000 inhabitants.
