(beta)-Lactam Combinations Have M. tb Killing Properties

Selected (beta)-lactams and (beta)-lactam-(beta)-lactamase inhibitor combinations have rapid bactericidal activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, according to a report from Nashville, Tennessee's Vanderbilt University.

The report was delivered at the IBC Biennial International Conference, "Mycobacterial Infection," held in Washington D.C. March 7-8, 1996.

Research presented in the 1940s confirmed that under certain culture conditions, penicillin inhibits the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but there has been little motivation to explore the potential utility of (beta)-lactams in the treatment of tuberculosis because effective...
