Deer Meat Safe After Few Tuberculosis Cases Found

Tests of more than 500 deer in the Alpena area turned up 19 infected with tuberculosis (TB), Michigan Department of Agriculture officials say.

The tests were conducted in the spring of 1995 after confirmation that a white-tailed buck shot in November 1994 had internal lesions showing the animal was infected with TB. Livestock in the area also were tested. So far, 25 livestock herds tested clean and were released from quarantine.

State veterinarian Michael Chaddock said the test results should have reassured Michigan residents that meat from livestock and deer was safe to eat if cooked properly and well done. "What we're trying to do is not alarm...
