"We suggest that all those interested in pleural disease should determine the etiologic pattern of pleural effusion in their region with a view to the adoption of regionally optimized diagnostic and therapeutic attitudes," researcher Luis Valdes and colleagues wrote ("The Etiology of Pleural Effusions in an Area with High Incidence of Tuberculosis," Chest, 1996;109(1):158-162).
As many as 20 percent of pleural effusions are attributed to unknown etiology in some studies, and a large variety of diseases can bring about this condition.
