Isoniazid Prophylaxis Effective in HIV Positive IVDUs

Researchers from Johns Hopkins, Baltimore, Maryland, report that expanded access to isoniazid prophylaxis in HIV positive injecting drug users (IDUs) can significantly reduce the incidence of tuberculosis (TB) in this patient population.

Dr. Neil M.H. Graham and his colleagues prospectively followed a community-based cohort of 2,960 IDUs, 942 of whom were HIV positive. The subjects received twice-weekly isoniazid chemoprophylaxis. Graham documented the incidence of HIV related mycobacterial infection that occurred between 1988 and 1994 in all study subjects (Arch Intern Med 1996;156:889-894).
