Auxotrophic BCG May Be Useful for At-Risk Populations

Auxotrophic strains of bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) represent a potentially safe and useful vaccine against tuberculosis for populations with increased HIV risk, according to a report from New York's Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

The only currently available vaccine for tuberculosis, bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG), is the most widely used vaccine in the world. The safety of live attenuated BCG vaccine in HIV positive adults remains unknown, however, and is a matter of some concern.
