IL-4 Involved in Down-Regulation of Mycobacterial Induced IL-1(beta)

Interleukin-4 (IL-4) may be partially responsible for the down-regulation of mycobacterial protein-induced IL-1(beta) in human mononuclear cells.

"Further studies are needed to establish the relevance of IL-4 in the pathogenesis of disease due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, especially when mycobacteria induces a predominantly Th2 cytokine profile which could aggravate the mycobacterial infection," researcher P. Mendez-Samperio and colleagues from Mexico's National School of Biological Sciences wrote ("Down-Modulation of Mycobacterial-Induced IL-1(beta) Production in Human Mononuclear Cells by IL-4," Clinical Experimental Immunology, May 1996;104:374-379).
