Wounds That Won't Heal in Bypass Patients May be TB

Coronary artery bypass surgery patients with infected sternotomy wounds that do not respond to treatment should be evaluated for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, according to a report from the University of Connecticut.

"A history of a previous tuberculous infection may be of great importance and should be sought from patients at risk for tuberculosis," researchers Eytan Rubinstien and Timothy Lehmann wrote ("Sternal Osteomyelitis Due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis Following Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery," Clinical Infectious Diseases, July 1996;23:202-203).
