HIV Positive Patients with TB Increase Reported

From 1987 through 1992, the number of HIV positive patients with tuberculosis (TB) who were hospitalized in New York State "increased dramatically," according to a multicenter team of epidemiologists (J Acquir Immun Defic Syndr Hum Retrovirol 199612:508-513).

After a review of hospital discharge records, Dr. Bruce D. Agins, New York State Department of Health and colleagues found that "... patients coinfected with HIV and tuberculosis increased by 270 percent, rising from 1,573 in 1987 to 5,825 in 1992. This constitutes an increase from 19.8 to 49.1 percent of all discharges of patients with tuberculosis."
