Latent TB Infection Does Not Appear to Hasten AIDS

Unlike active tuberculosis, latent Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection does not appear to hasten HIV progression, according to a report from Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.

As of 1994 an estimated 5.6 million persons worldwide were coinfected with HIV and M. tuberculosis. Among coinfected persons, HIV related immunodeficiency has been shown to promote reactivation of a latent tuberculous infection and to speed the progression of a primary tuberculous infection to active disease. In contrast, the effect of active tuberculosis or latent M. tuberculosis infection on HIV disease progression is not well understood.
