Weight Loss Agent Leads to M. abscessus Infection

An injectable adrenal cortex extract used by a Colorado physician as a weight-loss aid caused Mycobacterium abscessus infections in 68 percent of treated patients, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The extract, which is also used as an alternative therapy in AIDS patients, was also responsible for several cases of infection in Wyoming patients treated by the same doctor. The injections were given between the summer of 1995 and the spring of 1996.
