Self-Reported Skin Testing Acceptable In Certain Groups

A tuberculosis (TB) skin testing program involving self reporting done by postcard, fax, or phone is adequate and cost-effective in certain occupational settings, according to the results of such testing among New York City firefighters.

Researcher David J. Prezant and colleagues conducted the prospective study of New York firefighters and fire officers to compare the effectiveness of self-assessment of purified protein derivative (PPD) tuberculin testing with independently measured readings by trained professionals.
