AIDS Treatment on Verge of Cytokine Era

Cytokines are "... knocking at the door of changing therapeutic interventions," according to Dr. Charles Dinarello, University of Colorado, Denver.

Dr. H. Clifford Lane, U.S. NIAID, discussed the latest information on the use of IL-2 to boost CD4 cell production in AIDS patients at the 36th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, September 15-18, 1996. Lane said that IL-2 therapy results in an expansion of the T-cell population that exists at that point, but with a slight preferential increase in "naive" cells over "memory" cells. Over time, he explained, "... you see more diversity in the repertoire."
