New Jersey Reports More than 50% Drop in MDR-TB

In New Jersey the incidence of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) declined by more than 50 percent - from 5.7 percent to 2.5 percent - between 1991 and 1995.

These findings were reported by officials from the New Jersey Department of Health at the 36th Meeting of the American Society for Microbiology's Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held September 15-18, 1996 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

In a nationwide survey conducted during the first quarter of 1991, the proportion of MDR-TB cases in New Jersey was 6.6 percent - the second highest in the country behind New York.
