Mycobacterial Antigens May Indicate Protection Against HIV

The recognition of mycobacterial antigens may be a marker for protection against HIV, according to a report from the United Kingdom.

In a multicenter study researcher S.H. Khoo et al. found that the increased susceptibility of HIV positive persons to tuberculosis may be partly explained by the lack of TH1 mediated response in such patients.

They noted that TH1 mediated responses were lacking even in HIV positive individuals with relatively high CD4+ cell counts (400/(mu)L or above), and they suggest that these findings could have widespread implications for understanding of HIV immunity.
