Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Resection Has Minimal Role in Treatment

Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has only a limited role in the therapeutic lung resection of patients with tuberculosis, according to a report from Hong Kong.

Researcher Anthony P.C. Yim of the Prince of Wales Hospital noted, however, that video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is both safe and effective in diagnosing tuberculosis through pleural biopsies or wedge lung resection of indeterminate pulmonary nodules ("The Role of Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery in the Management of Pulmonary TB," Chest, September 1996;110(3):829-833).
