Routine Skin Testing Warranted in Children Treated at Public Clinics

Routine purified protein derivative skin testing is warranted for the identification of tuberculosis in children under the age of 5 who are treated at public health clinics, according to a report from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School.

The report was were presented at the 36th meeting of the American Society for Microbiology's Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, held September 15-18, 1996 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

It has long been recognized that targeted screening of children is less costly and more efficient in TB prevention as compared to mass screening.
