NAATs OK for Rapid Screening

Nucleic acid amplification techniques appear to be useful for the rapid screening of respiratory specimens to distinguish Mycobacterium tuberculosis from nontuberculous mycobacteria.

This may have applications for hospitals with limited isolation capabilities, according to researcher Joseph R. Dalovisio and colleagues ("Comparison of the Amplified Mycobacterium tuberculosis Direct Test, Amplicor MTB PCR, and IS6110-PCR for Detection of M. tuberculosis in Respiratory Specimens," Clinical Infectious Diseases, November 1996;23:1099-1106).
