According to an abstract submitted by the authors to the 48th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry, held July 28 - August 1, 1996, in Chicago, Illinois, "The laboratory diagnosis of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (Mtb) in respiratory specimens is currently based on acid-fast staining and culture of decontaminated samples on solid media or radiometric liquid culture. Problems with these procedures include low sensitivity, lack of specificity with staining, or slow methodology.
