Health Officials Seek Greater Power To Treat TB Patients

Arizona state health officials want authority to seek out and quarantine tuberculosis (TB) patients and enforce treatment if necessary as a means to protect the uninfected population from acquiring the disease.

A bill that would give the Department of Health Services (DHS) that power has the support of the head of the House Health Committee, Rep. Sue Gerard, R-Phoenix.

The proposal is opposed by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) in Arizona and a scattering of other states in which similar measures are being considered.
