IL-12 May Benefit Immunosuppressed MDR-TB Patients

Patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) who have CD4+ T cell counts below 500 have impaired interferon-gamma and interleukin 2 responses and might benefit from adjunctive interleukin-12 therapy, according to a report from the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

"(Our) study confirms previous work showing that interleukin-12 (IL-12) can enhance interferon gamma (IFN-gamma) production in an antigen-specific manner," researcher John F. McDyer and colleagues wrote ("Patients with MDR-TB with Low CD4+ T Cell Counts Have Impaired Th1 Responses," The Journal of Immunology, January 1997;158(1):492-500).
