Drug Resistant TB On Rise Along US-Mexican Border

Drug-sensitive tuberculosis (TB) is rapidly being replaced with drug-resistant strains of the disease on the U.S-Mexico border, according to an official with the Texas Department of Health.

"U.S. clinicians need to be alerted to a serious problem," Brian R. Smith wrote in an abstract presented to the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease North American Region Second Mid Year Conference, held February 27 through March 2, 1997 in Chicago, Illinois.

"Regimens for multidrug resistance and consultation must be used for repeat treatment of any person from the border."
