Gold Miners Receive TB Treatment On The Job

In the past, South African gold miners who developed tuberculosis (TB) on the job were discharged and sent home untreated to spread the disease in their impoverished villages. It was widely believed that workers could not be successfully treated for TB in the mining environment.

But one of the nation's largest gold mining companies has challenged this assumption by providing TB treatment to working miners.

The result - a more than 90 percent cure rate for working miners - is a remarkable example of how the private sector can dramatically impact public health, according to researcher R.L. Cowie of the University of Calgary.
