AhpC Not Critical in Isoniazid Resistance

The alkyl hydroperoxide reductase AhpC does not appear to play a direct role in isoniazid resistance in murine models, according to a multicenter report.

Researcher Beate Heym and colleagues found that Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains that produce catalase-peroxidase had a competitive advantage in immunocompetent hosts once the T-cell-mediated immune response, leading to the activation of macrophages and the release of large amounts of reactive O₂ species, had been induced ("Effects of Overexpression of the Alkyl Hydroperoxidase Reductase AhpC on the Virulence and Isoniazid Resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis," Infection and Immunity,...
