Pulmonary TB Appears to Enhance HIV Replication

Pulmonary tuberculosis appears to enhance local HIV-1 replication in vivo, according to a multicenter report.

"The combination of increased viral burden and mutations associated with tuberculosis may contribute to the increased mortality from other AIDS-related conditions in coinfected patients who have been successfully treated for tuberculosis," researcher Kih Nakata and colleagues wrote ("Mycobacterium tuberculosis Enhances HIV-1 Replication in the Lung," American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, March 1997;155:996-1003).
