AIDS associated neutrophil disorders may place these patients at risk for developing mycobacterial infections, which occur in more than 60 percent of AIDS patients. Many AIDS patients are neutropenic, resulting from HIV infection itself or the side effects of zidovudine or ganciclovir treatment, and this neutropenia may render these patients more susceptible to M. avium and other opportunistic infections.
