ESAT-6 Single Antigen Useful Test for Tuberculosis

The ESAT-6 single antigen appears to be useful in the diagnosis of tuberculosis, according to a report from Denmark.

"The present study is, to our knowledge, the first to demonstrate the feasibility of using a single purified antigen in the diagnosis of field cases of TB," researcher John M. Pollock and Peter Andersen wrote ("The Potential of the ESAT-6 Antigen Secreted by Virulent Mycobacteria for Specific Diagnosis of Tuberculosis," Journal of Infectious Diseases, May 1997;175:1251-1254).
