Wellcome Trust Gives Major Support To New DNA Test Development

Scientists are working on the development of a new DNA dipstick test for the rapid diagnosis of chlamydia, a common and serious sexually transmitted disease which affects 70 million women and their children worldwide.

The Wellcome Trust has awarded nearly 1.7 million pounds to Dr. Helen Lee (an expert in DNA technology) and colleagues at Cambridge University, to develop a simple and inexpensive DNA dipstick intended to enable healthcare workers in developing countries and poor inner city areas to perform non-invasive urine tests for the detection of chlamydia (Chlamydia trachomatis) in people at risk from infection.
