Outbreak in Taiwan Already Has Surpassed Number of 1996 Cases

An outbreak of Legionnaires' disease in Taiwan has produced almost twice as many cases in the first five months of 1997 as the total number of cases in 1996.

According to Dorothy Preslar, ProMed AHEAD Program Officer and Federation of American Scientists, in a communication on the ProMed Internet site (vol. 97/no. 156), the Taiwanese health department issued a warning on June 11, 1997 regarding the surge of Legionnaires' disease, indicating 81 cases had been notified from January through May this year vs. 44 cases in all of 1996.

Also, Preslar noted from media reports, the current outbreak is affecting people under the age of 50, with seven cases...
