Japanese Case Due to Vancomycin Resistant S. aureus

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) announced it has consulted with Japanese health officials about a patient with an infection caused by a Staphylococcus aureus isolate with low-level resistance to vancomycin.

The CDC tested an isolate provided by Japanese health officials and confirmed its resistance profile. To date, no such isolates have been identified in the United States.

Staphylococci produce a variety of disease symptoms ranging from a skin pustule to blood stream infections and death, the CDC explained. Staphylococcus pathogens are commonly found on the skin without producing any disease. They are also frequent causes...
