Researcher Marc Van Leuven and colleagues found that pulmonary resection can be performed safely and routinely in specialized units with acceptable levels of morbidity and mortality ("Pulmonary Resection as an Adjunct in the Treatment of Multiple Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis," The Annals of Thoracic Surgery," May 1997;63(5):1368-1373).
The incidence of pulmonary disease due to drug resistant M. tuberculosis (MDR-TB) has increased worldwide in recent years.
