TB Can Be Transplanted Along With New Lung

The transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis through a donated lung is not uncommon, according to a report of two such cases from New York's Columbia University.

"Given the potentially ominous implications of M. tuberculosis and other opportunistic respiratory pathogens after lung transplantation, it is essential for the clinician and radiologist to maintain vigilance in monitoring [lung transplant] patients to allow early diagnostic and therapeutic intervention," researcher Larry L. Schulman and colleagues wrote ("Pulmonary Tuberculosis After Lung Transplantation," Chest, May 1997;111(5):1459-1462).
