Sialoglycoconjugates Interfere with Adenovirus-Mediated Gene Transfer

The transmembrane mucin MUC1, a sialoglycoprotein, interferes with adenovirus-mediated gene transfer to epithelial cells in vitro and in human airway xenografts.

Recombinant adenoviruses (Ad) have been under development as gene transfer vehicles for the treatment of various lung diseases. Initial studies have demonstrated that recombinant Ad mediate high-efficiency gene transfer to airway epithelial cells in culture. Unfortunately, the efficiencies are markedly lower in primate and human conducting airway epithelium (J. Zabner et al., J. Clin. Invest. 1996;97:1504-11).
