Virus Causing Outbreak in Malaysian Children Continues to Elude Researchers

Experts from Malaysia and Japan have not been able to pin down the exact virus responsible for the death of 30 children in the recent outbreak occurring in Malaysia.

A recent ProMed report (ProMed vol. 97/no. 191; July 25, 1997) quoted the following: "The viral outbreak, especially in Sarawak, is under control. Nurseries, kindergartens, and swimming pools can resume operations," said a Sarawak Deputy Chief Minister. On why the number of deaths was reduced from 31 to 30, he said the patient from Daro died of cryptococcal meningitis (infection of the brain cover) and was excluded from the viral death list.
