Predominance of C Strain in New York City Linked to Drug Use

The widespread dissemination of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis C strain in New York City appears to be due to selective pressure exerted by a natural antimicrobial host factor induced by injection drug use.

This finding may have implications in the identification of new drugs for the treatment of tuberculosis, according to researcher Cindy R. Friedman and colleagues ("Widespread Dissemination of a Drug-Susceptible Strain of Mycobacterium tuberculosis," Journal of Infectious Diseases, 1997;176:478-484).
